Between Life and Death: Inside a Rural Health Facility Fighting to Save Mothers During the Rains

When the rains arrive in rural South Sudan, roads disappear, referrals stall, and childbirth becomes an emergency. This documentary-style public health story takes you inside a small rural health facility during the peak rainy season—where midwives, community health workers, and families fight against time, distance, and limited resources to save mothers and newborns. Through the experience of Amina, a teenage girl in labor, and the frontline health workers who care for her, this film reveals: • How flooded roads delay life-saving referrals • What happens when clinics operate without electricity, oxygen, or blood supplies • The critical role of skilled birth attendants and community health workers • The added risks faced by adolescent girls in fragile settings • Why maternal and newborn survival depends on systems that function even under pressure This is not an isolated story. It reflects the daily reality of millions of women across Africa and other low-income countries—where health systems are fragile, climate shocks are increasing, and every decision matters.

From Warning Signs to Safe Birth: A Mother’s Pregnancy Journey to Bouncing Baby

In a peaceful village in South Sudan, the story of Achol, a young woman expecting her first baby, demonstrates how timely health information and access to quality services can transform maternal outcomes. Achol’s experience reflects the real challenges faced by many pregnant women in South Sudan and across Africa, and highlights the life-saving power of community awareness, supportive families, and responsive health systems. When Achol began to experience persistent headaches and swelling in her feet during her second trimester, her friend Abuk recognized these symptoms from a health talk she had attended at the Primary Health Care Centre. This moment of shared knowledge proved critical. Encouraged by her friend and guided by the maternal health passport she had received during her first antenatal visit, Achol identified her symptoms as possible danger signs in pregnancy and took immediate action. Her decision to walk to the village Primary Health Care Centre marked a turning point in her pregnancy journey. At the clinic, Achol was welcomed into a clean, well-equipped facility supported by solar power and staffed by caring professionals. Dr. Arem, the facility in charge, listened attentively to her concerns and conducted essential checks, identifying early warning signs of a serious pregnancy condition. Because of the clinic’s readiness and the availability of trained staff, Achol received timely care that stabilized her condition and protected both her life and her unborn baby. She left the facility informed, confident, and supported — a powerful example of how respectful, quality care builds trust within communities. Weeks later, Achol returned to the same clinic for delivery. With the assistance of a midwife and the continued support of her family, Achol gave birth to a healthy baby safely. The joy of this moment extended beyond her household, inspiring the wider community to recognize the importance of seeking skilled care throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Achol’s story represents thousands of women across Africa whose lives can be saved through early recognition of danger signs, strong community support, and accessible health services. It highlights the crucial role of education, local health facilities, and dedicated healthcare workers in enhancing maternal and newborn survival. Call to Action We urge pregnant women, families, and community leaders to seek care at the nearest health facilities and non-profit organizations, as well as donor institutions, to invest in maternal health education and services. Support is urgently needed to expand the production of educational videos like this one — tools that inform, empower, and save lives. With increased funding, we can reach more communities, strengthen health systems, and ensure that every mother has the knowledge and care she deserves. Together, we can make safe pregnancy and childbirth a reality for every family.

From Fear to Confidence: Why Antenatal Care Matters for Every Mother in South Sudan

During her visit, she learned about the wide range of services offered to pregnant women, including: Routine maternal and fetal check-ups Health education and nutrition counseling Vaccination and disease prevention Early detection of pregnancy-related danger signs Preparation for safe delivery and healthy motherhood Like many women, she was surprised to discover that so much care is available at the clinic. She left feeling informed, supported, and empowered—committed to returning and encouraging other pregnant women in her community to seek care. This story highlights a critical public health message: Access alone is not enough—awareness, trust, and community engagement are essential to saving lives.

I watched the danger signs video at 2 a.m. when I felt something was wrong. I went to Mulago the next morning and they caught my high blood pressure early. Drate Health may have saved my life.
